How Often Should I Have My AC Serviced?

At Least Once a Year, Suggests Ottawa’s Trusted AC Experts

AC servicing is an important step in ensuring optimum performance and efficiency for your air conditioning unit. Besides extending the life of your AC, regular servicing and tune-ups will also help in reducing cooling costs and improving the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) of your Ottawa home. While there is no set limit on how frequently you should have your AC serviced, the HVAC experts at The Energy Centre in Ottawa suggest scheduling an annual AC servicing, ideally in the spring.

Every AC unit features multiple components and moving parts that contribute to its smooth working and energy-efficient performance. As part of routine maintenance, a licensed and experienced AC service technician will:

  • Inspect the main unit, compressor, coils, drain tubes, heat exchanger, thermostat and other critical sub components
  • Clear any debris in the supply and return ducts, clean or replace the AC filters, change the thermostat batteries, and so on.
  • Spot any early warning signs for damage or obstruction related to the components. For example, even a frayed wire could lead to a dangerous electrical malfunction, or a compressor malfunction. Your AC technician can predict potential problems and suggest the necessary AC repairs or remedial measures to prevent breakdowns in the middle of a hot summer.

For newer ACs, one service a year is usually sufficient to ensure that your home remains cool and comfortable throughout the season. However, older units may need more frequent care and attention for an uninterrupted run.
